The UCLA/Getty program is a 3-year Master's program focusing on the conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials. Each academic year consists of three, 10-week long quarters, in which students take lab or lecture/theory courses focusing on the different materials encountered in objects conservation. Detailed course summaries can be found on the UCLA/Getty Website.

The quarter system leads to concentrated projects, to be completed within the 10-week quarter.
Theory classes emphasize building a clear understanding of the structure, properties, and deterioration of the material. When possible, lab courses involve a conservation treatment as well as practical exercises to teach students about various conservation techniques and analyses related to the material in question.

Theory courses are sometimes cross-listed with other disciplines, including Archaeology, Materials Science and Engineering, and Information Studies.  The opportunity to learn alongside classmates in other disciplines permits exchange of knowledge and prepares students for collaborative work between allied professionals.
