EXAMINATION REPORT
TREATMENT REPORT
Summary
This teapot had extensive, poorly matched overpainting present on the handle and rim. Old overpaint was removed using acetone, revealing two slightly misaligned fragments at the rim and a plaster fill on the handle. Fragments at the rim were removed and realigned to achieve a better fit, small losses were filled with Aquazol 200 bulked with cellulose powder, glass microballoons, and dry pigment. Through consultation with the curator, we decided not to attempt to reverse and replace the plaster fill at the handle. Environmental conditions in the gallery are stable, so there should be no concern for soluble salts present in the plaster mitigating into the ceramic clay body.

Areas around the rim and handle were inpainted using successive thin layers of Golden acrylic paints mixed with Porcelain Restoration medium to closely imitate surrounding areas. Inpainted areas were polished with fine abrasive cloth and/or files in order to achieve a smooth finish and high gloss, similar to the original glaze.
